British Cave Explorer Rick Stanton has a reputation of being 'the man to call' when it comes to certain cave rescues. He is often flown to various parts of the world at very short notice because of his expertise and experience in cave diving. In 2004 Rick, along with his dive partner Jason Mallinson, were dispatched to Mexico to rescue British Forces personel, whilst a diplomatic spat took place between the UK and Mexico. A team of six British soliders had become stranded during a caving expedition, due to unseasonal floods in the Alpazat caverns. The Mexico Government were not happy - they thought the British were spying - in reality the army had simply got trapped on the wrong side of a flooded cave, but time and precious supplies was running out.
Rick will also discuss the 2010 rescue attempt of Eric Establie. Eric was a very experienced French cave diver who went missing whilst exploring a flooded cave system at the Dragonnière de Gaud in southern France. Rick and John Volanthen, a fellow member of the South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue team, were specially flown to the Ardèche by a RAF helicopter and Civil Defense jet. On arrival at the site, they put their immense cave diving experience and search and rescue skills into place, as they planned the rescue.
Finally Rick will talk about his involvement with the recent Norwegian Plura Cave System double fatality.
