The F-1 rocket engine is still a modern wonder. Each one produces one and half million pounds of thrust generating 32 million horsepower whilst burning 6,000 pounds of rocket grade kerosene and liquid oxygen every second. On 16 July 1969 the world watched in awe as five F-1 engines fired in concert, beginning the historic Apollo 11 mission. The F-1 engines burnt for just a few minutes before plummeting back to Earth and sinking in the Atlantic Ocean. A few days later Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.
In 2013 a most audacious expedition was launched to recover the F-1 rocket engines from 14,000 feet / 4,267 meters in the Atlantic. A team of experts from around the world were assembled and Cinematographer Evan Kovacs was invited to join this team. Evan will tell you how this project unfolded whilst showing rarely seen footage and images from this award winning expedition.
