Compared to shallow coral reefs, very little scientific research has been done on mesophotic coral ecosystems (aka Twilight Zone reefs). This presentation will review the work that has been completed and discuss the challenges of combining deep mixed-gas rebreather diving with scientific research. The presentation will also look at aggressive concepts that could increase our understanding of how these important ecosystems function and identify ways in which the technical diving community can help.
