About Michael Menduno
Michael is an award winning journalist & technologist who has written about diving and diving technology for more than 25 years. He coined the term “technical diving.” His work has appeared in Alert Diver, AQUA, Asian Diver, Business 2.0, Discovery, DiveLog Australasia, DIVER, NACD Journal, Outside, Quest, Scientific American, Scuba Times, Sports Diver, Undercurrent, Undersea Journal, WIRED and X-Ray magazines.
He founded and served as editor-in-chief for aquaCORPS: The Journal for Technical Diving, and its sister publication TechnicalDIVER (1990-1996), which helped usher tech diving into the mainstream of sports diving. He also produced the first Tek, EuroTek and AsiaTek conferences, organized Rebreather Forums 1.0 and 2.0 and was a speaker at Rebreather Forum 3.
Michael worked with Capt. Billy Deans to set up the first technical diving training center at Key West Diver in Key West, Florida, in the early 1990s, which quickly became a Mecca for tech divers from around the world. He has studied and trained with many of the best and brightest in the business. He has received the OZTEK Media Excellence Award in 2011 and the EuroTek Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012
Michael earned his open-water certification in 1976 and full-cave through National Association for Cave Diving (NACD) in 1990. He is a member of Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) and CCR certified on APD’s Evolution. Michael is also a performing musician and plays bass.
