In May 2019, a group of cavers visited the famous silver mines of Laurion, in the South-East Region of Attica (Greece). The main objective of this visit was to inspect and document the flooded chambers. And the journey of the underwater exploration began….
In collaboration with cave divers Erikos Kranidiotis and Stelios Stamatakis, an exploratory dive took place and the first video footage of a flooded mine in Greece was filmed. After this initiative, the team explored an additional three different mines and conducted further exploration and filming of the flooded galleries. The inflow of the water coming from the aquifer covered many of the arcades and completely sealed the deeper levels, making the mine a time capsule. At their debut, the exploration team will present the first rare images of a historical mine. The mines of Laurion are an important archaeological site and a valid part of the Industrial heritage of Greece. These mines funded the construction program of Acropolis and supported the Greek Economy during the 19th and 20th century. We are more than happy to participate at TekDiveUSA.2020 and share incredible photos, rare underwater footage and insight details of the mission.
